What you can try, is to set another WM/DesktopM as default --
perhaps KDE, and then try to start GNOME manually with
startx or xinit. If you use the option -- :1 (as in
xinit -- :1 ), you'll start a *second* X-session on
F8 (rather than F7 as is the "normal" X-session). You
can switch woth ctrl-alt-F7 or ctrl-alt-F8.
If the computer is working too hard, it may ignore ctrl-alt-del...
perhaps you can try with ctrl-alt-backspace -- that is especially
for killing the X-server (of cource, in run-level 5, it will
just start up again).

1. Hung Gnome
I have installed RH7.2 on a Compaq Proliant 5000 with quad Pentium Pros,
five 4.3 gig drives, and an array controller. When I start Gnome, it
thrashes the drives and eventually brings up the desktop with no icons. I
have also tried KDE and have separated one of the drives from the RAID 5
array thinking maybe the array bogs it down but no change. Any ideas? I'm
new to Linux and need my GUI.
