apt-get update/upgrade fails on Debian box

Post by Raj Bhaska » Sat, 26 Oct 2002 23:07:48

I posted this before, but got no reply, so I'll try again.

---- original message follows ----

Hi folks,
I'm trying to keep my Debian 2.2 (potato) box up to date using the
auto-update commands:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

However, although update seems to work okay, when I run apt-get upgrade,
I get the following error message:

Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages have been kept back
   apache apache-common dnsutils libc6 libc6-dev libpng2 libssl09
locales mpack php3-pgsql proftpd
   ssh tcpdump
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 13 not upgraded.

I am running the commands as root.

Any ideas?
Raj.

If your sources.list points to "stable", then this is an attempt to upgrade
to 3.0 (Woody).

If you are indeed trying to upgrade, then you should read the Debian 3.0
release notes, particularly this section:

http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading....

/etc/apt/sources.list.  Check with the apt-get(8) and sources.list(5) man
pages.

I believe that Debian 2.2 is "oldstable" now that 3.0 is "stable".  Updates
may stop (relatively) soon.

Note that the more recent (but less tested) security updates are
distributed through security.debian.org.

Perhaps consult the brief Debian documentation in /usr/share/doc/debian
(from the doc-debian package).

Um, where do I find the sources.list file?

I'm not trying (deliberately) to upgrade to Woody, I just want to ensure
that I've got the latest security patches et al on my box.

I don't know a huge amount about Linux (I can navigate my way about the
shell and stuff like that, but I don't know terribly much about the
internals) and I was landed with this box to administrate after the
previous admin guys decided that they didn't want to do it any more.

Thanks,
Raj.

Cheers, Paul.  When I changed references from 'stable' to 'oldstable' in
sources.list, it worked fine.  Thanks for your help.  It's a shame about
updates for Potato stopping soon, but I'm too scared to try and upgrade
to Woody on a live server :o).

I'll have a look at that.

Thanks,
Raj.
