I recently compiled a new kernel using 1.1.94 source, with no real errors.
However, when I boot with the new kernel, sendmail is unable to create an
SMTP socket, and aborts. innd commits suicide as well, for similar
reasons. Other network functions operate fine, including pcnfsd, etc.

Do I need to a) recompile innd and sendmail, b) get a new inetd or
something, or c) forget it and stick with 1.1.59?

How about "d) edit /etc/inetd.conf so that you don't have two programs
competing for the same port"?

Either run sendmail with inetd or as a daemon but don't do both. An
omission in earlier kernels hid this problem. It now works correctly
and will refuse to allow the duplicate binding.
