Need help with NEC CDR-260 CD ROM drive

Post by Siddharth R » Fri, 11 Nov 1994 15:23:18

I would like to hear from anyone who got the NEC CD-ROM  to work.
I got Scott Snyder's patch, but have had no luck with it.

I am running on a Pentium 90 Gateway machine.

Thanks
siddharth

At least one other person with "that" machine reported that the cdrom
works fine with the latest 1.1.62 kernel + ide-2.01.patch.61+.gz

Need help with NEC CDR-260 CD ROM drive

Post by Jerry Lyn » Sat, 12 Nov 1994 13:00:46

I've gotten my NEC-260 CDROM to work on my GATEWAY 2000 P5-90.

Here's what I had to do for my SLACKWARE 2.0.2 version:

1) SLACKWARE 2.0.2 does not create the dev for you, type:
        mknod /dev/nec260 b 26 0
        ln -s /dev/nec260 /dev/cdrom

2) Next Check your nec260.c file (for slackware 2.0.2 this was in
   /usr/src/linux-1.1.54/drivers/block/nec260.c) to make sure everything
   is set correctly to match your cdrom.  Gateway send mine as:

/* Configuration options which may be set when loading the driver. */

/* Major device number. */
MAYBE_STATIC int nec260_major = 26;

/* IRQ level used.  Only matters if nec260_no_hd is turned on. */
MAYBE_STATIC int nec260_irq = 15;

/* Base I/O address for the IDE adapter registers. */
MAYBE_STATIC int nec260_base = 0x170;

/* Set this to 1 if the device is configured as the master on the bus. */
MAYBE_STATIC int nec260_master = 1;

/* Set this to 1 if the cdrom drive is on the bus by itself. */
MAYBE_STATIC int nec260_no_hd = 1;

    You can check this stuff by looking in your autoexec.bat/config.sys file
    if it works for you in MS-DOS.

3) Rebuild Kernal if you had to make changes (and don't forget to run
   'lilo' on it. :) )

Hope that helps...it's basically a summary of the help I received from
Pat Volkerding...so direct any thanks to him...

Jerry

Need help with NEC CDR-260 CD ROM drive

With reference to the below,  I thought you could avoid a
kernel-rebuild by specifying the nec260_options in an append line
to lilo.conf.  (Assuming the kernel supports nec260 in the first place)
 Tried this, no dice.  Can this be done???  My system recognizes the
NEC260, but gets errors.

Need help with NEC CDR-260 CD ROM drive

Support for the NEC-260 is shifting away from this original ALPHA driver
into the new (E)IDE device driver, which combines CD & disk support.
It seems to work for most folks, at least as well as the original separate
driver did.  Give it a try and help Scott & I work out the kinks.

1. NEC CDR-260 CD-ROM (Gateway IDE CD-ROM)

Has anyone had success with the alpha CDR-260 driver on sunsite?  I
tried patching and compiling on both 1.0.9 and 1.1.18 sources
(slackware) and while both patched and compiled, neither could accesss
the CD.  I tried a cat /dev/idecd (which I created according to the
insructions) and it gave me an I/O error.

If anyone has made this work, please mail me.  (Include kernal
version).  I'll summarize if there is interest.
