Trying to bootup from SLS 1.03 a1 : LIL-

When I try to bootup from the a1 disk to install SLS1.03, a few tracks
are read and "LIL-" is displayed on the screen.
After that I cannot evoke any further responses from the system.
I have an 386DX33, AMI bios 1990, ST02 SCSI controller ( jumpered for
IRQ5 ) and ST296 harddisk.

I can use a little help here.
