I have read, over the past few weeks, that one way to help out in
XFree86 3.1 while using font intensive packages, like ghostview or
xmosaic, was to set up a font server using xfs. I read this and took
it to heart. I saved all of the posts about xfs. I read the man
pages on xfs. I read the man pages on X, that deal with a font server
(which are basically the same as the xfs pages), and I am royally
confused. So, if you don't mind answering some questions, I have a
bunch to ask.
1) When I invoke xfs, is it absolutely necessary to include the -port
option?
2) When I invoke xfs, if there is no configuration file, that I
created, where does it default to, to find a configuration file?
3) I think that if I use a font server, I need to put in my
XF86Config, in the FontPath part, "tcp/hostname:port", filling in the
hostname with the name of my host, and the port with the the port
address, correct?
4) Is there a default port address for font servers? I mean, I see
7100 popping up all over the man pages, but nowhere that I found, did
it say that that was the default address.
5) How long does it take to run?
Thanks for answering the questions. I ususally don't like to jump in
and try something, for fear that it will break what I already have
accomplished, and let me tell you resetting a Linux system on an IBM
is not fun.
Thanks!
Jason
