XFree in Slackware won't run

Post by jkra.. » Thu, 14 Apr 1994 03:41:00

I just installed Slackware 1.2.0.  I can't get X to work.  The only error
message I get is xinit: no such file or directory.  I can't find xconfig, and I
do not understan the man pages for xconfig, startx, and XFree86.  Any help

greatly appreciated.

XFree takes a fair amount of effort to get running. Before you can run
X, you will need: 1. Technical docs for your video card, 2. Technical
docs for your monitor, 3. A calculator, 4. Scratch
paper/pencil/eraser, 5. From 1 to 4 hours of time, depending on how
nice your hardware is.

The documentation you will need: The XFree HOWTO, several files in
/var/X11/lib/X11/etc/ including README, README.Config, another README
for your particular video hardware, modeDB.txt, and VideoModes.doc;
the file /var/X11/lib/X11/Xconfig.sample, and the manpages for an
XFree server (XF86_SVGA if you are using a normal SVGA card) and
Xconfig.

Start with the HOWTO. Read _all_ of it. Then read all of README. Then
read all of README.Config. Then read all of the README for your video
card. Then read all of the man pages. This will take almost an
hour. Now, if you are lucky, you will find exactly the right settings
to put in your Xconfig, and you will start X and it will run
fine. Don't count on it. Count on actually needing to use that
calculator etc., and spending another hour or two working through some
algebra to find the settings necessary for your card and monitor.

It's really not too hard to _do_. It is hard to figure out, and it does
take time.

Have fun using X!

dumb question: did you install the X series? what about the Xserver
you need for your card?  this is all in the readme's and mans.  I dont
think the man pages are all that hard to understand.

Since you've gotten this to work...   I have a solid X screen and even have
the mouse working properly.  The problem is...  nothing else happens....  I
can move the mouse, click it, etc...  no menus, icons, applications, etc.
I can even successfully exit X.  Just I don't see any thing to test....

Any ideas?
Thanks
Jeff

XFree in Slackware won't run

Post by Jeffrey Dang » Fri, 15 Apr 1994 07:40:20

I just got yggdrasil LGX fall93 and cannot boot at all!  My
configuration is:

ProaudioSpectrum + Texel 3028 CDROM.  Upon bootup I get timeouts on
the SCSI line.  I read the SCSI Faq but nothing seems to work.  Does
anyone have yggdrasil running with the PAS??

        Thanks,
               Jeff

I have the fall93 version running with a winstorm multimedia board, (which
emulates the PAS16), and an NEC doublespeed CDROM.

I'm using the kernel from the revB boot floppy that you can ftp from
yggdrasil.com.

This sounds much simpler than that - you need /usr/X386/bin in your path to
begin with. As to Config files. You install the Xconfig examples from the
slackware set copy over the one that matches your setup, tell it your
mouse type and it goes.

1. Slackware '96 - Syslogd won't run, craps out with a core dump...

Hello,
Wondering if anyone can lend a fellow a hand.  Running slackware '96,
and syslogd keeps crapping out with a core dump, and has never run from
install.  Well, that is not true, one day it actually ran, but I never found out
why.  But, rpm'ing the latest version didn't work, recompilling didn't work,
I am at a loss.  I know I read of atleast 1 other person who had this happening.

Does anyone have a solution?  This is driving me crazy, since the only time PPP
has ever worked for me, was (strangely enough) the only time syslogd decided
to work.  I think the problem may be related, but I digress.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
