rpc.portmap (p10, p11, and p12) AND portmap (p4)

rpc.portmap (p10, p11, and p12) AND portmap (p4)

I've read the faq's, and hacked a lot but STILL ---

rpc.portmap core dumps at the first sign of a request (even rpcinfo)

This has been going on since I had a pl4 kernel, & is still happening under pl12
with net2, so I think it must be down to my setup!

I have a DLINK ethernet - sometimes connected to a DOS box running PCNFS, or PCTCP
depending. I also use a SLIP link to demon. Everything seems to work apart from the rpc's

Anybody who's made the rpc mechanism work - what have I missed ???

I've have also had this problem, and I think many more people do also.
I'm not using a DLINK, so we can assume that is not the source of the
trouble.

For one, I have never been able to get the portmap (or rpc.portmap)
from SLS to work.  The Slackware folks have their portmap wisely
commented out of /etc/rc*.  All of the portmaps that I have compiled
from the RPC package also seg fault.  Still, I had never heard of
anyone else having problems with it before now.

The solution was to get the binaries from the old SUNRPC package from
ftp.funet.fi.  They seem to work OK for me.  Now that I am convinced
that I not crazy(*), I'll look in to tracking down this bug.

1. How to use rpc.portmap, rpc.mountd, rpc.nfsd?

[Q2] Stupid but non-FAQ NFS question #2:
Thanks for the help of finding out the rpc.portmap, rpc.mountd, rcp.nfsd.
Still, after reading the NFS-FAQ, Linux Network Admin Guide, none of these guys
seem to work at all.  I still get the message of RPC fault: program is not
registered.  I guess I really need a cookbook example.

Let's say I have machines A and B which both of them can telnet and ftp to each
other.  In other words, they are properly connected.  Now, this is how I did.
I add three statements at the begninning of the rc.inet2 at machine A:

/usr/sbin/rpc.portmap
/usr/sbin/rpc.mountd
/usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd
/bin/mount -t nfs B:/home /mnt

Then, I add /mnt B[rw] at /etc/exports at machine A.
Then, reboot machine A, and it prompts RPC fault: program is not registered.
Can anyone provide me an idiot-proof way of attacking this?  Thanks.
BTW, someone mention "premeter".  What is that?
