3c589 initial system load via NFS

Post by Steve J Hanselm » Sun, 09 Oct 1994 21:18:30

Hi,

I have a Linux box running 1.0.9 (Slackware 2).  I wish to install
Linux on my notebook using UMSDOS as the file system and installing from
the other machine over the network, however, the boot disks do not
recognise the 3c589 PCMCIA adapter.  I have looked in the source directory
and Space has code written to recognise the 589 provided that the kernel is
configured that way, so my question(s) is/are:-

1.  How can I tell what options a given kernel was built with
2.  Are there any gotchas about a 3c589 (it is mentioned in the ethernet
FAQ, but I guess that it's fairly out of date as code is now there to
    handle it.)

3.  If I rebuild the kernel how do I build boot and root disks
(at least number 3 must be in a faq, but grep doesn't find it)

Thanks in advance.

I have just rechecked Space.c and now I can't find any 589 code, did I
imagine things or has it disappeared?

Is anyone running 3c589 adapters?

Now I've found the code again, it was on the Slackware release,
1.1.18, UMSDOS 0.3a and IFS.

But it's not in the current kernel, any ideas?

I'm running a 3c589 on an Austin laptop.  You need the stuff from
David Hines at cb-iris.stanford in /pub/pcmcia.  You also need
linux kernel 1.1.49 or greater.  I had to do a few tricks to get it
running, but most people report no problems.
