Hi,

I am confused with the above terms! I want to pose a simple question.
I have a Linux box, a 14.4 modem, an account to freenet. Here is the
question: what can i do to receive email, news, netscape ...? And
what is the best way to learn about setting them up? Thank you.

DIP     - Dual Inline Package
SLIP    - Serial Line Internet Protocol
PPP     - Point-to-Point Protocol
TCP     - Transmission Control Protocol
IP      - Internet Protocol

Netscape: FTP the binary (from ftp.netscape.com)

Email: Get the sendmail binary and config stuff....recommend
just installing the slackware packages, less hassle
Then make sure sendmail is run in your startup..
Like so... (in /etc/rc.d/rc.M)
  # Start the sendmail daemon:
  if [ -x /usr/sbin/sendmail ]; then
echo "Starting sendmail daemon (/usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q 15m)..."
   /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q 15m
  fi

News: mmm....you can do UUCP...but the easiest is to use a NNTP
Server.  (Use another machine as a news server).  tin -r enables the
use of NNTP (set the NNTPSERVER environment variable btw to the proper
machine) or rebuild trn/rn/etc to support NNTP

Hope this starts you off

Tran:

There is an excellent book on this subject called the Network Administrator's
Guide, produced as part of the Linux Documentation Project (LDP).  I apolo-
gize to the author but his name slips my mind at the moment.

You can download this document in a variety of forms including pure ASCII and
postscript.  It's at sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/doc/ldp/nag (or very close to
that).  Even better, it's out as a Nutshell book now, so you can save your-
self from printing the three hundred plus pages (unless you're patient
enough to read it online)!

I've also purchased "Running Linux" by Matt Welsh recently; it covers these
topics less thoroughly, but also goes over Linux in breathtaking detail.

>DIP     - Dual Inline Package

Your E.E. education is showing :)

'DIP', as commonly referred in 'Linux communications' means 'Dialup
IP' or, 'Dialup Internet Protocol'. It is a program to automate the
establishment of a SLIP link. It was reciently augmented to aid with
PPP.

It is a program which was written (and apparently abandoned) by Fred

1. DIP/SLIP - confused with questions

Sounds like you are using an older version of dip that didn't quite work.
Different versions of dip have been battling with these problems for a
while.
It *may* work for dip-337c-uri.

Your best bet for dialin slip is to try sliplogin (available on sunsite).
It is a smaller program and easier to install than dip for dialup.
