XFree86 and Packard-Bell 17" Monitor

Post by Harry A. Smit » Fri, 11 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hi there,

I hav sussessfully installed Slackware96 on a Packard-Bell and Acer
computer with a 14" monitor. I recently upgraded to a Packard Bell with a
17" monitor. The docs are lousy, but I gather I am using a "S3 Inc ViRGE
PCI" system. I can glean the refresh rates etc, but I have no idea what the
chipset actually is! So I tried the old standby of choosing the SVGA
server. Startx fails with a message "not enough memory for 1600 x 1200
resolution". What is going on here? Can I fix it. the VGA server works ok,
but I don't want that low resolution. I will be happy with SVGA resolution,
but how can I get it??? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

1. Linux on Packard-Bell DX250 "Force 53CD" system?

Hi folks.  Finally got around to starting Linux install on my new(ly
scavenged) test system.  It's an older Packard-Bell multimedia system
they called the "Force 53CD".  Comes with 4m onboard ram, and a cdrom
that is (believe it or not!) connected to the sound card of all
places.

Anyway, I tried installing SuSE 5.3 and it couldn't find/use the
cdrom, so my install is halted for the moment.  Guess I could try a
couple different distributions, but I thought I'd see if anyone else
had contended with this particular wierdness first.  Takers anyone?
tia.
