Buying an Oxygen GVX1 X server worth it???

Post by Karsten Wutzk » Thu, 13 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hi all!

I have a 3DLabs Oxygen GVX1 graphics card and I really have to switch to
Linux (besides personal preferences...) to develop OpenGL apps. However
for the R3 rasterizer chip on the GVX1 there's no driver support from
XFree 4.0 yet, but I really HAVE TO develop under/for Linux. So the only
options I see are the following:

1. Buy an X Server, like Xi Graphics Pro Edition. However, it costs
$249, which is quite some money. Does anyone know if this pays off
rather than 2.? What are the downsides to this? What about OpenGL
versions? From Xi Graphics web page I could see their OpenGL
implementation is v1.1.1 compliant "only". That bad? Can I use Mesa?
Does anyone here have experience with the Xi Graphics servers?

2. Instead of spending so much on an X server, just buy a second
graphics card and get it up and running? ACK?!

BTW: Of course I need 3D hardware acceleration...

Thanks for your help!

Karsten

I have the Permedia Create running with Xi Pro edition.
There are some problems.... Their OpenGL is _slow_ for
glRead/DrawPixels. I mean it's really incedibly slow.
Texturing , Quake III and bzflag are quite fast. Xi is working
* accelerating OpenGL. They offer a good support.
If you don't use textures and if you make use of Read/Draw
pixels than you should use Mesa (it's faster!)

Best regards,

;-) Yes. The 1.0 glDrawPixels implementation is the original SGI sample
code.  And it *really* sucks.  With drawpix I get about 69 fps. ick.  The 1.1
alpha improves that to about 1030 fps.  much better.  When the LGD's (and pro) are
updated again, it'll contain the new *pixel() implementation...

Hi Jon!

When will the update be made? What about future OpenGL 1.2 compliance?

Can I have two completely different XServers running, say XFree 4.0 with my TNT2 and
one from Xi Graphics with the 3DLabs Oxygen GVX1 (I'll try not to use glDrawPixels...
;) )? As you can see I'm still pretty much interested...
