??

You can set the default colordepth in /etc/XF86Config. In the screen-section
add:
  DefaultColorDepth 32

This should do the job.

/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers:
the line which begins with :0 local ...

this file configuration allows you to determine the resolution of all xservers on your linux box and all -query xsessions. usefull i think. and more flexible than the hint below.
