how to change window-manager under RH4.2/Xfree86-3.3/xdm

Post by Chen Elvis » Wed, 20 Aug 1997 04:00:00

greetings:

I have set up an PC with Redhat 4.2, XFree86-3.3 and change the
runlevel so it uses xdm to login at boot-up time.

However, it uses fvwm95-2 as the default window manager.  My question
is:  how does one change that?  I have checked all the scripts at
/etc/X11/xdm but didn't really find anything useful.  However, at the other
PC I built with redhat 4.1/XFree-3.2, a simple ~/.xinit with, say,
"exec afterstep" will use afterstep as the default window manager.  This
didn't work under RH4.2/XFree86-3.3

any help is very much appreciated,

Elvis

there should be a .xinitrc file in your home directory that should be calling
fvwm, if the file doesnt exist or it doesnt say that..then just add
"exec afterstep" or just "afterstep" at the last line and it should load fine..

normally xdm uses xsession to manage which window manager it executes.
if you don't have a .xsession in your home directory it will use the system
default.
i'm running redhat 4.2 with xfree 3.3.1....  the following is a copy of my
.xsession from
my home directory...

---------------------------------------------
#!/bin/bash

xclock -geometry 49x56-78+0 &
xterm -name login -geometry 80x20+0+0 -sb &
xscreensaver -timeout 5 -visual best &

if [ ! -z $(type -path fvwm) ]; then
 exec fvwm95-2
else
 exec twm
fi
---------------------------

hope this helps..

1. How do I change my Window manager under XFree86 3.3.2

I've just upgraded to 3.3.2 because my PC has an ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP
graphics card (unsupported in 3.3.1).

I've loaded RedHat 5.0 on another PC with XFree86 3.3.1 and I think that
uses fwm.  However since upgrading to Xfree86 3.3.2 I get the TWM window
manager.

How do I change it?
