(XFree86 4.0) voodoo3 3000 agp displays "garbage" in quake3

Post by paul » Mon, 20 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I just upgraded to XFree86 4.0 from 3.3.6 to fix a problem with my
voodoo3.  When I start quake3 the screen looks like pieces of the
desktop and quake3 mixed together to create an unusable display.
Instead of the voodoo3 displaying "garbage" after exiting a game (as it
did in v 3.3.6), now it just displays the game as "garbage".    I have
found no references to this problem, and I need help, any would be
greatly appreciated.

Not positive if my problem was exactly the same, but it was at least
very similar.  I had to delete the quake3 config file created in your
.q3a/q3demo directory.  That at least got me to the menu.  Something is
still not right for me though.  The menu will come up, but it very, very
choppy and unresponsive.  Takes about 5 minutes to blindly hit the ~ key
and type quit to get out.

Yes i know this problem.

You must start Q3 with:

./linuxquake3 +set in_dgamouse 0 +set r_glDriver libMesaVoodooGL.so.3.1

It works fine with Q3 Test 1.07.

I don't know wich version you use, but try this !!!

Try to start q3 with:

./linuxquake3 +set in_dgamouse 0 +set r_glDriver libMesaVoodooGL.so.3.1

works fine at Q3 Test 1.07, perhaps with any other version, too.

Thanks for the input.  I finally got it working last night, here's a
couple of comments.  For the current q3 download out now(q3demo not
q3test) they changed the keyword from r_glDriver to r_gldriver.  That
caused some problems, and you need to direct it to
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so, thats the mesa that comes with X 4.0 with the
DRI stuff in it.  If you try to run the DRI server with the non-DRI GL
lib it defaults to Mesa software and you get a 1 fps choppy menu that
kind of hard to get out of.

1. Voodoo3 3000 AGP with XFree86 4.01: help needed

Greetings:

The subject line tells you what I have. However, I'm getting no
acceleration. /var/log/XFree86.0.log reports thusly:

[drm] failed to load kernel module "tdfx"

I'm confused by conflicting advice regarding the Voodoo3 under 4.0 and
4.01. Do I still need to download and install the kernel module from
linux.3dfx.com, or is that no longer necessary with 4.01 ? And since
that site is down, is there somewhere else I can acquire the driver,
assuming that's what I need ?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. I need to finish a review by next
week, and I need the OpenGL support to make the deadline.

Best regards,
