Starting X in 1024x768 mode

Starting X in 1024x768 mode

Post by Guido Domeni » Sat, 30 Dec 1995 04:00:00

Hi everybody,

every time I start the X client (with the startx command), I get a
640x480 video resolution. Nothing wrong, since I just have to push
twice "alt-ctrl-+" to get the 1024x768 mode; but I'd like to know if
there's a way to start X straight in 1024x768 mode (some config file?)

Thanks and best regards,

Guido

The server cycles through the available resolutions in the order they
are given on the "Modes" line, so just make the entry for the resolution
you want to start in the first one on the line.

You have a /etc/XF86Config file in which there's a screen section in which
there's a subsection called Display. Inthis section there's a line beginning
with Modes and after that "640x480" and so on. Change this to the solution
you want ot start with.

Yeah, in the XF86Config file.In the section "Screen", on the
line 'Modes' ( where you have a list of the resolutions ), put the 1024x768
first; the first mode on the line is the resolution that will be used
when you boot up.

I believe this is in the Xfree HOW-TO.

1. Mode line for Appl 1705 @ 1024x768?

Hi group,

I just installed 2000 on my G3 (Gossamer) desktop with an Apple 1705
Multiple Scan monitor. I get 640x480, 800x600 and 832x624, but the
1024x768 appears horribly distorted.

I think it's a Modeline problem: the beast wishes to do 1024x768 at 75Hz
vertical, 60.24kHz horizontal, but XF86Config does not have a modeline
for 1024x768 at this vertical freq. Has anybody cooked up a satisfactory
mode line for this configuration?

Thanks,
