CLGD5426/XFree-3.1.1 graphics glitches

I have a STB Horizon-VL CLGD5426 VESA local bus video card on a Hint
EISA/VESA 486DX2/66 motherboard.  I'm having problems with graphical
glitches using XFree86-3.1.1 (the problem also occurred with 3.1).  When
an xterm scrolls, or is exposed after being hidden behind another window,
some 'droppings' frequently appear.  These consist of horizontal lines
about 10 pixels long, and appear between the lines of text about an inch
from the left-hand side of the window.  Redrawing the xterm by hitting
^L or re-exposing the window will cause them to go away.

Is this a known problem?  Are there any fixes available?

I _don't_know_ what is wrong, but I suspect that there is some
timing problems between XFree86's drivers and yours videocards
DRAM-memory-chips.. I had samekind problems when I used option

        Option "fifo_aggressive"

in my XF86Config. But when I took it out, glittering disappeared.
Check if you have the same option set and try to take that out.
Or if that is not enought, try then add an option

        Option "fifo_conservative"

I have Cirrus Logic GLGD-5428 VLB-card and XFree86 3.1 and kernel is
1.1.92.

I get the same thing with a 5428vlb with 2Mb but only in 1280x1024x256
but they disappear on their own.  There are no problems in other modes.

You might want to try the "no_imageblt" function.
It may be related to some kind of timing problem with the 5426 chip
on VL-bus and the DX2/66 CPU with the accelerated functions in the
XFree86 Cirrus driver.

1. Upgrading from XFree-3.1 to XFree-3.1.1?

How do I upgrade from XFree-3.1 to XFree-3.1.1?  I had XFree-3.1 with
Slackware 2.0.  I downloaded the following files from sunsite.unc.edu
X311S3.tgz (I have S3 based video card), X311bin.tgz, X311cfg.tgz,
X311doc.tgz, X311fnt.tgz, X311inc.tgz, and X311lib.tgz. They were in
the /pub/X11/XFree-3.1.1 directory. I unpacked the files using the
command mentioned in the INSTALL file which is
   gunzip < xxx.tgz | tar xfBp -
where xxx is the name of the tgz file that I want to uncompress. After
doing that I added the line /usr/X11R6/lib in the /etc/ld.so.conf file
and ran 'ldconfig'. Now when I do 'X -probeonly > /tmp/x.out 2>&1' it
still shows that I have XFree-3.1.  How do I know that I am running
XFree-3.1.1?  Is there any other command which shows what version of
XFree I am using?  Is there anything else I have to do?
Please send me email.

Thanks in advance,
Sikander
P.S. I also gave the command 'chmod 755 `find /usr/X11R6 -type d -perm 777`
after unpacking the files, but it gave me the message that check the
help on chmod. I am not sure if it ran successfully.
