straight into X (using xdm), but it defaults to 8 bpp...how can I get
it to default to 16 or more?

Bill,

In your /etc/X11/XF86Config in the Screen Section add the line:

  DefaultColorDepth 16

adjust the 16 to whatever depth you want.

An example of the section from my file:

Section "Screen"
    Driver      "accel"
    Device      "Vision 968"
    Monitor     "CTX-1785GM"
    # this is that line
    DefaultColorDepth 16
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       8
        Modes       "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort    0 0
        Virtual     1024 768
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       16
        Modes       "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "1280x1024"
        ViewPort    0 0
        Virtual     1024 768
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       32
        Modes       "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
        Virtual     1024 768
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Try 16 first.
Unless your doing HIGH-detail Graphic the higher levels will only slow
the system down and you won't notice the differences.

1. Changing default color depth.

I am trying to get to 16-bit or 24-bit color in XWindows.  I tried
commenting out the 8-bit screen section in the XF86Config file, and on
startup it said it could not find the 8-bit color display and something
about that being the default mode.  How can I change the default mode to
16 or 24 bits?  Is there a file somewhere I missed?
