XFree86 4.3.0 fails to start on Mach64 GX

Post by Philip Wrigh » Thu, 19 Jun 2003 04:28:32

I am trying to install Redhat 9.0 on a PII-450 system that has an
ATI PCI Mach64 GX card and Xwindows refuses to start. Are there known
problems with this combo? My XFree86.0.log file is as follows:

XFree86 4.3.0 fails to start on Mach64 GX

Post by Dances With Crow » Thu, 19 Jun 2003 05:37:57

On Tue, 17 Jun 2003 15:28:32 -0400, Philip Wright staggered into the
Black Sun and said:

Quote:> I am trying to install Redhat 9.0 on a PII-450 system that has an
> ATI PCI Mach64 GX card and Xwindows refuses to start.

"X" or "the X Window System", not "X-Windows".

[ massive snip.  Don't post anything > 300 lines to Usenet; put it on
your webspace and post a URL instead. ]

Quote:> (**) VGA(0): videoRam: 2048 kBytes (using 256 kBytes).

This ain't right.  Why is it using only 256K of the (apparently) 2M
video RAM available?  Is there a line like this in /etc/X11/XF86Config ?

VideoRam "256"

?  It should be:

VideoRam "2048"

...assuming this card actually has 2M of VRAM on it.  The number is in
K, so if there are 8M, it'd be 8192, etcetera.  If it has more, find the
right number and put that in.  If no VideoRam line exists, put it into
the Device section.

Quote:> VGA(0): Not using default mode "640x350" (insufficient memory for mode)
> VGA(0): Not using default mode "640x400" (insufficient memory for mode)

[repeat many times]

Didn't all those lines about insufficient memory make you think
something was wrong with the memory settings?  Anyway, if there is only
2M of VRAM on the card, you're going to be limited to 1024x768 at 16-bit
color... hope that doesn't cause a problem.

Quote:> (EE) VGA(0): Virtual height (0) is too small for the hardware (min 1)

When diagnosing a problem with XFree86, if you have the error log
available, you find the first line that has "(EE)" in it, read that
line, then search backwards from that line for anything related to it
that seems weird.
