xkbcomp problem

Since I installed XF 3.3.1, I am getting this error when I start X as
a user:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Quote:> Error:  Cannot open "compiled/server-0.xkm" to write keyboard description
>                   Exiting

Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

I don't get this error when I start X as root.  I've looked all around
for something with improper permissions ... but I can't find it.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

1. xkbcomp problems

My keyboard backspace just stopped working in X applications (Netscape,
x3270. . .) and I can't figure out how to fix it.  I get the following
error from the X startup:

(--) S3: Using 16 planes of 746x54 at (0,601) aligned 8 as font cache
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Permissions on /var/tmp :

drwxr-xr-x   2 root     root         1024 Oct 21 20:24 tmp/

and :

drwxr-xr-t   2 root     root         1024 Oct 21 20:29 tmp/

The last one is actually the original set of permissions.  Is there any
way to fix this error?
