X Font Server can't connect to XF86

X Font Server can't connect to XF86

Post by Pete Fole » Tue, 21 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hey,
I posted something about this several days ago, but I have been away and it
looks like my newsserver has already deleted the message, so I will try
again (sorry if you already responded)

I am attempting to get True Type fonts to work in X.  I am running RedHat
6.0 (XF86 -> Enlightenment -> Gnome) and True Type fonts do not work (like
in Netscape for web pages and such).  I notice that when I start X, i get
an error, something like

X Font Server  - cannot connect.  error no 111

So basically I was wondering how can i get True Type Fonts working in X?  I
have tried lots of stuff and I cannot get it to work.  How can i get the X
Font Setver to connect to XF86 and have my fonts working, so fonts like
Arial, Tahoma, Verdana will work in Netsape.  Any help world be greatly
appreciated.  Thanks.

-Pete

Since you don't say exactly what you've tried and which fontserver -
hard to say exactly where you went "astray".. take a look at the link
below - two different approaches described there. (The "native" xfsft,
included in the xfs that comes with RH6, and an independant TT
fontserver, xfstt). It's been reported to work for others ;)

Good luck - report back if still stuck.

X Font Server can't connect to XF86

Well, i have tried lots of stuff.. hard to remember exactly what...  :o)

Basically I am just using whatever is sefault in the RH Linux install (xfs
I think).  I have tried modifying the FOnt Path variable in XF86Config and
if I change it to 7200 ot 'unix:/-1" X will not load.  I will take a look
at the site and see what happens.  I have also tried the xfstt but had no
luck with that either....  Like I said I will check out that site and see
what happens... thanks..

1. XF86 Server error: could not open default cursor font 'cursor' PLEASE HELP!

I've installed Slackware 3.0.0 and gotten everything _but_ XWindows up
and running.  Everything about XWindows install went without a hitch and
I installed all the options/fonts.  I've edited config files and done
evrything I can find in the docs, BUT...

When I startx, everything runs along smoothly until I get:

Fatal server error
could not open default cursor font 'cursor'
xinit: No such file or directory

If possible, i'd like to find out where this file is _supposed_ to live.
Or, _where_ I can set the cursor font to find a useable one...

All help mucho appreciado!
