GS/EpsonStylusII: Can I talk to someone who has made this work?

Post by John Tomaszews » Sat, 22 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I've been messing around with my printer and Ghostscript trying to
get Postscript output for several nights with more failure than success.
I'm learning but I suspect I just don't understand enough about
Postscript/lpr/GS/drivers/etc.  Any communication with gurus or semi-gurus
would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Sincerely,

John T.

The key to printing to an Epson Stylus II (or Pro) is to include the
switch "-dMicroveave".  This turns off the internal software weaving
which doesn't seam to work with any of the later Epsons.

1. making gs work with lpr. HELP.

I am having trouble setting up the printcap or the gs filter for my new
bj200ex printer.

I can type the command:
  gs -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=bj200 -sOutputFile=/dev/lp1 filename.ps
and out comes my happy postscript documents.

But when I create the following entry in my printcap:

# printcap for bj200 in text mode.
bj200|bj|bj200ex|Cannon bj200ex ink jet printer:\
    :lp=/dev/lp1: \
    :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/bj200: \
    :sh:
#
# printcap for bj200 in postscript mode.
bj200ps|bjps|bj200exps|Cannon bj200ex ink jet printer filtered through gs:\
    :lp=/dev/lp1: \
    :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/bj200: \
    :of=/usr/spool/lpd/bj200/input_filter_ps: \
    :mx#0:\
    :sh:
#

where the file input_filte_ps is:

#!/bin/sh
# Ghostscript input filter for printing postscript documents.
#
/usr/bin/gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -sDevice=bj200 -sOutputFile=- -
#
#

I get nothing out of the printer.

Issuing the command 'lpr -Pbjps filename.ps' puts an entry in the que
that just doesn't go away. The computer swaps and gs gobbles up cpu, but
nothing ever comes out of the printer. The file access should be ok
everywhere, because the text que works. I would really like to get this
postscript thing going. I suspect that I am missing something simple.
Any ideas?

Thanks -Andy
