Can Linux handle Dell Inspiron 7500 SXGA+ (1400x1050)?

Hi Daniel et al.,

Regarding my Dell Inspiron 7500 in 1400x1050 mode on RH Linux 6.1:

OK, I went back to Steve's inspiron site and redownloaded his custom
1400x1050 XF86_Mach64 server, which is a patch to XF86 3.3.6.
Both the names and dates of the files available have changed within
the last 4 days, so the XF86_Mach64 server I got this time is
different than the one I pulled down late last week, and yes,
the new one does work as advertised on steve's page and on daniel's.

One more thing: I'm using vga=791 and 16 bit color. I do not notice
any flicker. I heard that the card will support 24 bit color at
1400x1050.

Has anyone tried this?
Is the flicker bad?
What should the vga= be set to in lilo.conf?
Where are the vga= settings documented?

Thanks,
Charlie

>Where are the vga= settings documented?

The vga setting is the desired VESA mode number, plus 512.  VGA=791 gives
you mode 117, which must be your 1440x1080 16-bit.  For the Inspiron 7000,
we usually use VGA=792, mode 118, which is 1024x768 24-bit.

You can find many VESA mode number lists on the net, but the only true way
is to write some code to ask the VESA BIOS what it supports.

What refresh rate was it running at?

Wow, those VESA numbers sound too dangerous to document.
Thanks for the info.
