Post by Matt Zagn » Sat, 17 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

Does any one have Ideas on the S3 VGA card and how good are they

I am trying to run WinTV from Win95 and also use the same card
for linux.

I have been informed that the S3 VGA cards are the best for WinTV
but are they supported in linux ?

May thanks

S3 VGA card/ best video cards for Linux and Win95 ?

I've always been happy with S3's under Linux.  I've used an S3 Virge
and a 968.  The speed is more than I need (ie, Quake is held back by
the processor, not the video card), the stability has been excellent,
the installation a breeze.

Even better, the S3's seem prepared for the future.  The GGI person
who is doing the S3 drivers (Steffen Seeger) is friendly and seems an
utter guru.

I'd probably suggest an S3 over any other video card because of my
happy experiences.

S3 Virge is very good with Linux, for a low-end cheap card.
It's very annoying with Win95, though. Get the W95 driver setup
from www.s3.com-- don't use the MS default setup. Set the vertical
refresh rates higher to get the full screen width.

1. Best Video Card - Best Sound Card - HELP!!

Your 2 cents worth please!

I want 16/32M AGP graphics with good 3D performance, a TV tuner (I
guess this needs a BT848 or similar), realtime video capture & playback
(some form of MPEG compression?). I don't need Linux support for the TV
or Video right away so long as it's in the pipeline. Am I expecting too
much from one card? Am I better off buying a graphics card and a
seperate TV/Video card - if so, please let me have your recommendations.

I am aware that some graphics card manufacturers have been hostile, or
less than helpful, to the open source community and I would prefer not
to buy their products, given a choice.

Regarding sound cards, most of the advice I have received points to the
sound blaster awe64 or such. What of the SoundBlaster Live! value or
quality clones.

All advice gratefully received.
