XF 4.0.2 / Trident Cyber9388 problems?

I have a NEC Versa SX laptop which has a Trident Cyper9388 2M graphics
card.  I'm running the latest Debian Woody distro, which has XF 4.0.2,
and I set up the server to use the "trident" option.

It doesn't really work;  The screen comes up and the background color is
fine, and my button bar outline is OK.  But, all my icons (including the
mouse cursor) are kind of "exploded"; they're about 10 times larger than
they shold be with lots of space in between the individual pixels.  Very
odd.  I've played around with various options from the "trident" man
page; using a software cursor was necessary to get the mouse to move but
didn't help the picture.

Here's my XF86Config-4 section for the card:

  Section "Device"
          Identifier    "Trident *9388"
          Driver                "trident"
  #     Option          "NoAccel" "on"
          Option                "SWCursor" "on"
          Option                "*Shadow" "off"
  #     Option          "NoPCIBurst" "on"
  EndSection

  Section "Monitor"
          Identifier    "Generic Monitor"
          HorizSync     28-49
          VertRefresh   43-72
          Option                "DPMS"
  EndSection

  Section "Screen"
          Identifier    "Default Screen"
          Device                "Trident *9388"
          Monitor               "Generic Monitor"
          DefaultDepth  8
          SubSection "Display"
                  Depth         1
                  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
          EndSubSection
          SubSection "Display"
                  Depth         4
                  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
          EndSubSection
          SubSection "Display"
                  Depth         8
                  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
          EndSubSection
          SubSection "Display"
                  Depth         15
                  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
          EndSubSection
          SubSection "Display"
                  Depth         16
                  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
          EndSubSection
          SubSection "Display"
                  Depth         24
                  Modes         "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
          EndSubSection
  EndSection

I've tried all various combinations of these options with no real effect.
I also tried 16 bit color (this should work at 1024x768).

I can run Windows 95 on this same system and that works OK.  Also, I did
have a version of XF86 3.3.6 that worked with this system before, but I
couldn't get it working just before I upgraded (this was one reason I
did).  In retrospect I think when I boot Windows, it sticks the card
into some kind of weird mode that rebooting doesn't fix.  Maybe if I
removed the battery it would fix it...

Anyway, anyone else with this system or similar hardware have it working
with XF 4?  Any thoughts about other things I should try?

Fooey; I'm running XF 4.0.3, not 4.0.2.  Sorry about that...

I can provide any other info, such as output of the X server, that you
like as well.
