How do I change color depth in RH Linux 5.2?

Post by Neil Datt » Mon, 19 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi - I was wondering if someone could tell me what settings I can change to
get more color depth in X.  I am running XFree86.  I couldn't figure out
what to change in the XF86Config file. I know my card can handle more color
depth.  I am currently running 8 (I think). Thanks in advance - Niladri

I believe (no I'm certain) that should be
  startx -- -bpp n  (n =8, 16, 24,...)

startx -- -bpp 16        <-- 16K colors
startx -- -bpp 24        <-- 24K colors

it is mentioned in the man pages of startx <#man startx>

Actually 2^16 (65k) and 2^24 (256 x 65k)  colors respectively.

1. Changing Default Color Depth in RH 6

How do you change the default color depth from 8 bpp to 16 bpp in RH 6.0 so
that when X starts up in runlevel 5, you get more colors?  I remember in RH
5.2 this used to be editing the /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers file.  Has this
changed now that gnome is used?  Any help would be appreciaited.  Thanks!
