XFree86 Configuration for Packard Bell Monitor

XFree86 Configuration for Packard Bell Monitor

Post by Thomas J. A. Bricke » Sat, 15 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I have a Packard Bell Legend 3550.  It is a pentium 100MHz PC and it
comes with a Packard Bell 1512SL Monitor and a Cirrus Logic GD5430 video
card.  It has Windows 95 preinstalled and I put Linux 1.2.12 on it.

I have configured XFree86 with only one problem that I have noticed: when
I run Windows 95 and center the root window via the horizontal and
vertical controls on the monitor front panel and then switch to Linux,
the root window is shifted to the right by about 20 pixels.  Would the
cause of this be that I have not matched some XFree86 config parameters
with the exact values that Windows 95 is using?  If this is so, what are
the parameters, and how do I determine the values that Windows 95 is
using?  If it is not a configuration problem, is there any mechanism to
avoid this other than readjusting the monitor from the front panel
controls each time I switch operating systems?

I hope these are the right newsgroups to post to.  If not, I would
appreciate it if someone would kindly point me in the right direction.

Thank you,
Tom Bricker

It sounds like the monitor modes in your XF86Config need to be tuned.
Run xvidtune to get the correct modes, and put them in /etc/XF86Config.
The XF86Config file has several mode settings corresponding to differing
vertical refresh rates and screen resolutions so you'll need to
determine which mode line your server is using and edit it.
You can do this by noting the initial modes xvidtune gives you when you
fire it up, they'll correspond to those from the mode line in XF86Config
that your server is using for a given screen resolution.
Be very careful not to make typos or change the wrong mode line.
ATTEMPTING TO RUN MODES YOUR MONITOR CANT HANDLE CAN FRY YOUR MONITOR!

Good Luck,
Robert Benson.
