XF86_SVGA server and 24bpp with the S3 Virge

XF86_SVGA server and 24bpp with the S3 Virge

Post by Gaetano Senator » Tue, 22 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Does anybody now if there is a fix for the XF86_SVGA  server, in order
to have the 24 bpp working correctly with a S3 Virge (with 4MB)? 8 and
16 bpp are OK but iwth 24bpp a number of applications
( netscape, acroread, ...) do not work properly, even with the version
3.3 of XFree.

There was a patch for the  3.2 version, which however screws up the
possibility of working with 8 and 16 bpp, and more importantly makes the
X server unstable even at 24bpp.

XF86_SVGA server and 24bpp with the S3 Virge

I experiment the same problems with the XFree86 3.3.2 and 3.3.3 SVGA
servers and my S3 Virge MX. It occurs with Communicator 4.0.7 that
seems to run in "black/white". Then I install Communicator 4.5
and now everything works, both in 24bpp and 32bpp. No problem
(for now) with other applications (AcrobatReader, StarOffice, gv,...)

1. S3 ViRGE/DX and S3 ViRGE/GX: is one better than the other?

On a friend's recommendation, I ordered an S3 ViRGE/DX video card for
the PC I am putting together. I received an S3 ViRGE/GX card instead.

Is one better than the other in general? Is one more compatible with
XFree86? Or are the two roughly the same, so that I should just keep
the GX card?

Thanks for your input,
