Hard drive error...?

Okay, so yesterday I started on my quest to begin some upgrades that I've
been meaning to do (Window Maker, GIMP, kernel).  Well, I tried configure
for Window Maker(.53) and I get an error.  Then I tried configure for GIMP,
and I get the same error.  Then I thought, wait a minute, so I tried
configure on some of the older packages that have already been successfully
installed (and thus, successfully configured), and I get the _same_ error.

The error occurs _always_ at the point where gcc is checking whether the
-static flag works...

hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 {UncorrectableError}, LBASect=3293965,
   sector=628798
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:02(hda), sector 628798

These errors repeat indefinitely, incrementing the sector (by 2?) on each
pass.  The errors only stop after I ^C _several_ times.  This is driving me
crazy...any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I ran e2fsck, it found no bad blocks, but it found some disconnected
inodes...whatever that means.

I apologize if that post is off topic...I couldn't think of a better group
to post it.

1. hard drive ERRORS?

I have a problem similar to the one that Scott has but I think its just a
bad sector on my hard drive (2.1G WD).  Got any tips (other than
replacement) for configuration (RH 6.0) so that I don't get notified of the
error every second (literally).  Fsck knows there is an error but it just
wants to continue without fixing it.  This thing sounds really bad so I
don't know how much longer its going to last....
