ANOTHER s3-864 question!

Post by Tomas Lu » Wed, 08 Feb 1995 10:10:41

I have a ASUS Video Magic PCI-864 Card (s3-864) w/ 2 meg installed, and
are having BIG prblems getting X to run. I'm using the version that comes
w/ slackware 2.1.0. I've tried to use the S3 server and the mono server
but all that happens when i get it to run is that i get the b/w
background, and the mouse-pointer in the middle of the screen, and when i
move the mouse it jumps to the lower left corner and then the machine just
hangs.  I can't even reboot it. Also, in the setup, the X -probeonly will
hang the machine so I press N on that question.

Here's my Hardware:

486dx2-66 (16 meg & PCI. AMI bios w/ powersave (Energy Star))
s3-864 w/ 2meg
SCSI (dunno modell)
3Com 509
3 button mouse

OK, here's the info...

SuperProbe tells me:

Chipset: S3 Vision864
Memmory: 2048K
RAMDAC : AT&T 20C492 15/16/18-bid DAC with gamma correction (with 6-bit
wide lookuptable (or in 6-bit mod)

If i look at the DAC-chip. it says:

S3 SDAC
86C716-MG
9415 F11388

(AT&T aren't mentioned at all!)

The bias is a Phoenix BIOS and the label says "D33321". When i Boot it
tellsme that it is dated 06/20-94.

The Processor(?) itself says:

S3 Vision864
86C864-P
1X27-0001
9416 9406095

How do i fins the Clockchip? what do i look for?

...Anyone has a Config that will work with this card?

That should be XFree86-3.1, right?

It's from S3, that's why they don't mention AT&T :^)
SuperProbe sometimes guesses wrong. But the new version of SuperProbe in
XFree86-3.1.1 should correctly detect an S3-SDAC

You found it, the SDAC is RAMDAC and Clockchip in one piece.

My suggestion would be to get the XFree86-3.1.1 S3 server, as the
version in XFree86-3.1 had a few bugs when handling the SDAC.

if you'd read some of your docs (e.g. README.S3) and browse for some
of your magic words (e.g. SDAC) you should find that

        ClockChip "s3_sdac"
        RAMDAC    "s3_sdac"

should be the right thing [tm].

You didn't include your server output (as always plea'd) and didn't mention
you server version, so here one more hint:

for S3 SDAC support you need XFree86 3.1 patchlevel 3 or newer, better get
XFree86 3.1.1 now (at least if you don't yet have pl3).
