font strangeness from xterm and emacs

Post by John M. Adam » Sun, 22 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I run this:

xterm -font -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* &

Some weird box is drawn for the initial cursor
Characters typed are echoed with mostly extra wide spacing.
But command output seems normal.
This isn't limited to xterm. Emacs does the same kind of thing.
xfontsel displays the font just fine.
Like this:
$  p w d
/home/jma/sys/X11

This was happening with 312 straight off the Slakware 3.0 cd, so I
tried upgrading to 312G to see if that would help.

To install 312G I just untarred all the 312*gz's under /usr/X11.
Hopefully this was appropriate. Everything was/is running fine except
for this one strange problem. This problem happens with multiple font
selections.

Any hint about this greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

Yes, this happens to me too.  But, I don't understand why you
want to run xterm with a non-fixed width font anyway.

This won't help at all, because that is the X server, not the client.

Assuming that there is a bug, it would be in the X client part.

1. Smaller fonts for xterms, emacs

Hi,

Can somebody point me to where there is documentation about or tell me
how to select a smaller font for my windows (e.g. xterm or emacs).
Currently, the default font in emacs is so large that the amount of
text appearing on the screen doesn't amount to much.

Thanks,
Dan
