XFree86 3.2 upgrade. Is it safe?

Post by Andrey Nikola » Sat, 04 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Hello. Sorry for such simple question. But I've XFree 3.1.xxx with RedHat
4.0. I'd like to know is it worth to upgrade it to XFree 3.2.
 I've ordinary 486DX4 100Mhz 16meg box with Cirrus Logic 5426 1 meg. VLB card.
Of course I'd like to use glint for such upgrade but ... :)
Well. The problem is it's my home computer which is not on the net. So I
cant experiment with it and if I fail to reinstall all from 0.
So should I just use rpm to upgrade packages or there are some cliffs?
Thanx in advance for your attention.

Speaking from my own experience, XFree3.2 has installation problems.  If
you don't have a backup CD-Rom with an earlier Linux/XFree, or an internet
connection, you're taking a risk installing it right now.

I recently upgraded XF86 3.1 to XF86 3.2 with the rpms from the RedHat
site (not the ones in the contrib directory).  I didn't have any
problems but I did have to upgrade a bunch of other stuff on the system
to get them installed.

A backup is definitly in order, but if you are careful and proceed with
caution, you should be ok.  Doing an 'rpm -q --requires -p <package>'
will let you know what it needs.  Then you can go out and get all the
packages it requires.  Note that this is a recursive procedure.

Oh, I also upgraded rpm to get all the dependency checking
functionalty.  Not sure if it was required, but I did it anyway.

Good luck

And anyone who is in the habit of reading news as user "root" is probably
quite an authority on the things that can go wrong.

Doing things as root when you don't have a specific reason to do so is an
exceedingly bad habit and it will bite you sooner or later.

From my experience, yes (if you read the manual before ...).
Get the relnotes file and read chapter 4, to determine what to download;
download all and follow the instructions in the relnotes.
(Make a complete backup of your /usr/X11 tree - it can't hurt, and I needed
mine to restore the config files which I *really* would not have
needed to download and unpack ...)
