magic key sequence to get out of X in RH5.1

Post by HUAIYUAN CHE » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I just installed RedHat Linux 5.1 and am having problems
with X Window. I use 'startx' command and it seems that
X Window does start up and 'fvwm' is run. But I see
multiple duplicated images of everything - clock, root
menus, etc, making X practically not usuable at all.
i used to use a key sequence to get out of X after
'startx' to go back to shell but don't remember the
magic sequence anymore. i've years experience on Unix
and have read RedHat manuals,faqs/how-tos but still
can not find the relevant info. So, i'll really appreciate
any help or lead to the questions below:

1. what is the magic key strokes (sequence) to return
to shell from X after 'startx' ?
2. how to fix the duplicated image problem in X to
make it usuable? i did notice there's an article
on 'dulicate image' in X on Thinkpad posted earlier,
but i doubt it's the same deal as mine is a Compaq
Presario 5020. Display card is ATI Rage LT Pro.
Does anyone know what chipset ATI Rage LT Pro has?
btw, monitor is Compaq MV 500. I run Win98 on the
primary EIDE Quantum HD. Linux runs on a WesternDigital
HD and can only be floppy booted. I wasn't able to
successfully run LILO out of MBR. Am not sure if
   it's a BIOS, Win98 problem.

Please email me as well if you could at the address below.

The "magic sequence" you refer to is <CTRL><ALT><Backspace> while in X,
should kill the X server and return you to a console.
Also, within X, you can try <CTRL><ALT>+  or <CTRL><ALT>-  [minus sign]
to cycle through the available resolutions.  There is a small chance you
will find one that already works, fixing your duplication problem.

You probably mean <Ctrl> <Alt> <Backspace> you can also do <Ctrl> <Alt>
<Fn> To switch to a new consol where you can login again.

I couldn't run LILO either because my Linux is on hdc, hda is Windows, and
hdb is a cdrom. I use Loadlin.

If your "duplicate images" are anything like my garbage edges of windows,
try turning bit blitting off in the X configuration. If you can't find
that, ask me when I'm in Linux.

1. More page outs than page ins?

Hi,

Would anyone be kind enough to explain to me why systems usually have
more page-outs than page-ins? It has got me stumped for quite some
time. I would think that if 100mb is paged out from memory to disk,
then similarly 100mb should be paged-in back from disk to physical
memory?

Or is my understand of paging-in and paging-out wrong? i.e Page-outs
occur when a page is pushed from main memory to the paging space due
to a variety of reasons (lack of physical memory being one of them)
while page-ins' occur when there is free physical memory and these
pages are pushed back from disk back to the physical memory.

TIA!
