upgrade to kernel 2.4.2 e X won't start!

Post by Lorenz » Fri, 09 Mar 2001 07:02:52

I have a RedHat 6.1 with XFreee 4.0.1 and the kernel 2.2.17 My graphic
card is a Matrox G400.
I decided to upgraede to the kernel 2.4.2 and so I compiled directly
into the core of the kernel the DRI, the agpgart and the driver for
the Matrox. Result? X won't start: a black screen with this kind of
error:

gdm_slave_windows_kill_ioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting  :0

That was the log I found that I discovered later. The first thing I
see written on the screen is the warning about gdm that seems to be
killed misteriously but that was already running!

Ideas? Thanks! Lorenzo

1. kernel upgrade to 2.4.9 and X won't start

I have RHL 7.0 installed which shipped with kernel linux-2.2.16.  I
just upgraded the kernel to 2.4.9 and when I reboot into runlevel 5
the system hangs trying to start the X server with messages in
/var/log/messages like:

gdm[697]: gdm_slave_windows_kill_ioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
[...snip...]
gdm[690]: Failed to start X server several times in a short time period; disabling display :0

I have an ATI All-In_Wonder video card and am running xfree86-4.0.2
with the ATI driver ATI-4.0.2.i386.

I really have no idea where to start trying to debug this.  What would
cause the X windows setup to fail after a kernel upgrade?

Thanks,
John Hunter
