I installed XFree86 3.1.2A.
All seems to go now.
But how can I start X in 16 bit or greater mode ???

16/24bpp is only supported in some servers and only for some cards.
Neither ET4000 in the SVGA server nor the W32 server support it.

1. Setting X to display in 16, 24, and 32 bit color mode.
I was playing with X for some time, but I couldn't figure out how to set
it to work in 16, 24, and 32-bit color mode. I have a
#9 771video card w/2M of VRAM.
Also ones in a while I get a message saying that some program (usually
Netscape) cannot allocate the default background
color. What does that mean and how can I fix that?
