Running Remote X programs

Post by Abe Waranowit » Sat, 12 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hello!

I was trying to run xclock from a remote Sun Station, which works fine.
But There were no window controls, borders, buttons, etc.  Kinda like
running X w/o a window manager.  Everything else (native) ran fine.

I'm using RedHat 4.1 w/svga server on an IBM 755CD TP.  I used telnet
to connect from an xterm window.

Did I forget something?

Thanks!

What window manager are you running? If you are using fvwm there are lines in
your local .fvwmrc file (or in the system fvwm config) that control how certain
applications appear, e.g:

NoTitle xclock

It is less likely, but also possible, that you have settings for xclock in your
local .Xdefaults file.

Your local filemanager probably specified no window decorations for some
applications (like xclock for example). I assume this doesn't happen
for all applications ? Check you filemanager configuration.

1. Running a remote interactive program from inside another program

Hello,

Here's the problem I have for the Unix veterans out there:  I have a
program that needs to start a remote program and take control of its (the remote
program's) stdin/out/err.  I tried forking rsh.  But after doing all the coding I
discovered that rsh doesn't allow interactive programs to be run.

Is there any way to make rsh work for interactive programs? What is the simplest way of solving my problem?

Thanks,

Prasanna
