XFconfig problem - DEC P90 (S3V864)

 I am having problems getting XFree86 v.3.1 patchlevel 5 to work on
 my Dec Celebris Pentium-90 with a built-in S3 Vision864 (86C864) card :
 (Ramdac is S3 SDAC (80C716), SuperProbe returns 80C892 w/gamma-corr.)

 I use the following in XF86Config:

   Device:

     Videoram  1024
     Chipset   "s3_generic"
     Clockchip "s3_sdac"
     Ramdac    "s3_sdac"

 starting X with startx, I get a flimering and distorted screen "flying"
 from one side of the screen to the other....most uncomforting !!
 ...and then I have to boot to get the videocard to reset completely.

 I should be able to run in 1024x768x8.

  Help is most welcome !!!

I am using almost the same configuration, but with 2048 videoram whithout
problems. The monitor is a 17" Nokia 447E and I have switched to XFree86
3.1.1. I havn't defined the 1280x1024 mode, too small on a 17" monitor.

Not sure what you can do with 1MB Videoram only, but here is my XF86Config:
