by I am running Red Hat 8.0 with KDE 3.0.5a. My displaymanager is GDM. All
the latest updates are applied. Kernel is 2.4.18-27.
Users are able to work just fine up until the time that they logout. At
that time, KDE shuts down (no kdeinit running) but the displaymanager
never comes back up. There is just a black screen. The system does not
respond to input from a mouse or a keyboard. <CTL><ALT><F1-9>,
<CTL><ALT><BK>, and any other key sequence I can think of will not work.
It is not possible to spawn a virtual terminal. I believe it to be true
that even <CTL><ALT><DEL> is ignored. Default runlevel in inittab is 5.
The system is still alive and it can be connected to over the network. The
X server is running along with gdm. Killing them or HUPing them does
nothing. Rerunning kdeinit does nothing. The only solution is to reboot.
This is obviously not a good solution.
Is anyone else having this problem and is there a solution? The one
complication to this is that the home directories are NFS mounted. I do
not know if that plays into this somehow. This never seems to happen for
the root user (local account). It is also not a given that it *always*
happens to a user, although it seems to be getting more frequent.
