Problems with color depth

Post by Dan Waite » Tue, 03 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I am running the S.u.S.E. Matrox X Server with a Matrox Mystique 220 video
card.  I can get up to 24 bit color depth at 1024x768, which is my typical
resolution.  When I load a few programs, however, (such as control panel,
xterm, and emacs) my color depth drops to 8 bits.  I have 32 MB of RAM and
a 40 MB swap space.  I know I should be able to see 24 bit color with
several programs running.  What do I do?

1. Problem with color-depth XF86_Mach32

I am currently using XFree86 3.1.2 running Red Hat linux 2.1 on a Leading
Edge pentium 90, 16mb, ATI Mach32 1mb video ram, ...

I have used the Xconfigurator script to set up my XF86Config file.  In
the Xconfigurator script everything seemed to go fine.  I'm able to
get the X server up and running great at 1024X768 but only 6 bbp.  I have
checked the option in the script to add the line which would specify
that I want the ramdac to use 8 bbp.  But I am still receiving only 6bbp
when I do a X -probeonly.  I had this running correctly once
before, but have long since reinstalled several times.

The following is my probe:
Is there something I'm missing?
The monitor is wrong as well.  I've got a Goldstar 17" 1725, but the
other 17 inchers seems to work just fine.
