I get this written to stderr every time that startx runs.
What does it mean?
What might be wrong?
How to I fix it?

Probably that your video card doesn't support the RENDER expension (needed
for anti-aliasing of fonts)  Or more properly, that the current driver does
not allow you to use this extension if your card does support it.

If you do
xdpyinfo | grep RENDER
it will return RENDER if supported.

In your case not.

What version of X are you using ?  Check if a more recent version will
support it for your card at the Xfree86 site.

Otherwise the message is harmless enough.

BTW, a groups.google.com search with your exact subject header will return
a ton of hits . . .  nudge, nudge, wink, wink. ;)

all the best,
