radeon 8500 - video playback

radeon 8500 - video playback

Post by mirv » Tue, 30 Jul 2002 18:04:38

Hello,
I have a problem of not being able to have any video playback (used mplayer,
xine, various other progs) with the same result of no video, but audio comes
out fine. Is this due to the somewhat limited support for the 8500 in X, or
is it just not enough tinkering on my part?

Debian sid, xfree86 4.2.0 (source compiled), kernel 2.4.17 if that's any
help.

Thanks in advance,

AFAIK, XFree86 4.2.0 doesn't have great Xv support for the Radeon
8500...  Check out Gatos for better Xv drivers:

XVideo appears now (dunno about before...)
I use SDL for mplayer, runs very smooth.

Not enough reading on my part it seems - I was using DRI, it's most
likely I wasn't inserting the right radeon module.

Thanks! Got Gatos, and the drm_kernel. Video playback works fine now.

1. Limbo and Radeon 8500 video cards

Does anyone know if the support for both 2D and 3D for the Radeon 8500
series video cards is in with Limbo? With Red Hat 7.3 there is 2D
support for the 8500 but not 3D.

I am having trouble getting an appropriate video driver installed and
that is why I am wonding. I would make the jump to Limbo if the support
I need is there. Thanks.
