S3 ViRGE/DX and S3 ViRGE/GX: is one better than the other?

Post by Mike Decer » Fri, 12 Jun 1998 04:00:00

On a friend's recommendation, I ordered an S3 ViRGE/DX video card for
the PC I am putting together. I received an S3 ViRGE/GX card instead.

Is one better than the other in general? Is one more compatible with
XFree86? Or are the two roughly the same, so that I should just keep
the GX card?

Thanks for your input,

You got more than you bargained for. The Virge/DX and GX both have the same
Virge chip and architecture, but the DX uses EDO RAM and the GX uses the
faster SGRAM. So, be happy and feel lucky!

Findamentally, they are identical.  The difference is that the GX is
ported for both SGRAM and EDO DRAM.

I think the actual difference is that virge dx is a drop in replacement for the
plain virge but has a clock of 175 Mhz vs. 135 for the plain; this allows
manufacturers to reuse blank boards and prior board layout artwork. As the
plain virge used edo ram so does DX. The GX isn't pin compatible with the DX;
has a 185 Mhz clock and can use either edo or sgram; it is software compatible
with the DX.
