The problem is your X Font Server has failed to start or has died, as
indicated by the fact that the X server can't connect to the XFS socket.

Try '/etc/init.d/xfs restart' or, preferably, 'service xfs restart' and
then try to restart X.

X windows problem - XIO: fatal IO error 104

Unfortunately, upon doing that I get :
****************

Reloading X Font Server config:                            [FAILED]

Reloading X Font Server config:                            [FAILED]
**********************************************

I'm guessing from that it's a problem with my X Font Server configuration -
any ideas?

1. XIO: fatal error 104

For several weeks I have been successfully running a small home network
(RH 5.0, 2.0.32 with XFREE86 3.3.2-3 SVGA server). To eliminate
unnecessary hardware I run the gateway (rabitt) with monitor/keyboard
using rlogin from a local linux machine (pooh). X windows programs are
also remoted to pooh via the network. Everything ran great until this
weekend when for an unknown cause the remote X connection became flaky.

Whenever an X application is started on pooh it only proceeds for a
short time and then "hangs". The only alternative is to kill the app.
Restarting the app seems to hang the app in a shorter time. Could a
buffer be filling and not emptying?

The only error that occurs is rarely on the rlogin gateway xterm
(rabitt) I get
XIO: fatal error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server "pooh:0.0"
after 577 requests (576 known processed) with 9 events remaining

Stop/start the X server on pooh doesn't affect the problem. Neither does
rebooting either machine (Gates does get us into bad habits). The
network in every other way works fine. Local X and apps work fine on the
gateway (rabitt) when the monitor/keyboard is restored.

I am looking for pointers for finding out what's happening i.e. what to
dump, look at, docs, source, etc. Remove SPAM items from reply address.
Thanks in advance for all coments/ suggestions.
