System:  Supermicro p5tse mb, amd k5-75, 32mb ram, 2.1 gig wd 32100 hd,
ne2000 clone, generic pci video card w/ 2mb ram box claims 5440 chipset,
x -probeonly says 5430.  Slackware 3.1 base w/ X from same, tried
several servers including E beta from xfree86.org

Problem: Only server that works is monochrome.  Other (older) servers
(16 and svga) clear screen, then lock system solid, require hw reboot.
Newer servers (E series) manage to clear screen, change color to blue,
then lock solid with HDD led glowing.

Ideas: ?  Assuming no-one has the magic solution to this one, is there
any way to convince X to log it's startup steps?  At least give me a
fighting chance.

Followup:  It appears to be dying in the window manager.  Can change
the startup appearance (colors) via xinitrc, but the variety of
managers I've tried so far all result in system lockups.

Didn't help, nor did any of the other slow-down options.  However...

I'm such a dork.  It finally dawned on me that it might not be X
at all, but a flakey something else.  Installed MS Windows (puke) just
to test my theory, and sure enough, same problems.  Back to store, try
different video card (exact same brand/model/etc), same results.
Install generic Trident 9440agi card, works like a charm.  Wish I
could better describe the Cirrus card in question, but it's *really*
generic, box just says Video 50, and made in USA, otherwise not a
clue as to its origins.

Thanks for the help anyway, everyone.  Gotta go scrub Windows off
a drive.

What happens if you disable the acceleration, by using a "noaccel" option
in the Device section of your card in the XF86Config file?
