X on IBM Thinkpad 560E?

Has anyone succeeded in getting XFree86 or Metro-X to work properly on the
IBM Thinkpad 560E?  In particular, it's the 800x600 12.1" TFT display,
Trident * 9382 graphics chipset, 2MB VRAM.

Any information or pointers would be greatly appreciated.  Please copy to

Thanks!

Use XF86Setup from the command line, this will launch XFree86 using a 16
colour VGA server and allow you to build your XF86Config file. The *9382
is listed as a generic *93xx rather than being named as a specific card,
use a horizontal scan range for extended VGA capable of 800x600 at 60Hz and
you should then be able to run XFree at 800x600. If you find that the screen
goes bright white when you exit XFree make sure you are not using the option
to blank the screen using APM.

You might want to check out Accelerated-X 4.1 with the trident
update. There is support now for the 93xx series. Had last week a
ThinkPad 760XD here. 1280x1024 at 8bpp external resolution, and

external and internal display (as well as simultaneous display) works
like a charm.

1. Linux on an IBM Thinkpad 560E

I'm trying to set up Red Hat 6.0, upgraded to the 2.2.9 kernel, on my
old Thinkpad 560E.  I don't seem to be able to get the sound to work,
either using the out-of-the box kernel, or using the recompiled 2.2.9
kernel with all the relevant sound modules enabled.

Any hints will be appreciated.
