Weird mouse behaviour w/ XFree86 3.3.2 and Logitech PS/2 mouse

Post by Greg Hughe » Fri, 26 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Hey everyone.  I've just got an annoying problem I'd like to get rid of,
if I can.  Everytime I switch out of X to a virtual console and then
switch back, my mouse is completely unresponsive for about 3 seconds and
then when it does come back, it acts like it's moved around and clicked
on everything, even though I haven't touched it!  For example, when
playing SVGALib-Quake, then quitting out, the mouse selects some text in
the Xterm I launched it from, even though I haven't touched the mouse!

I'm using XFree86 3.3.2 with the Millennium video card (2 MB) and a
Logitech PS/2 mouse.  If anyone knows what's going on, please give me a
shout!

Thanks,
- Greg

My guess is that it's a PS/2 thing.  I noticed the same thing on my
computer, which is a 486 with a totally different video card and version
of XFree86.  I sort of accepted it as "normal" until a few days ago when
I was compiling stuff on a (text) virtual console.  Every once in a
while I'd get an error from X along the lines of "unable to open mouse"
and X would die.
The dreaded gpm program doesn't seem to be involved, though.  I just
killed it, and the same thing is still happening here.

Hopefully someone else has some more stuff to add; it is kind of
annoying now that I think of it!

Well, X has never died on me with mouse errors. =)  But, um, I used to
have a different mouse (still PS/2) and it worked fine. In fact, the
system was working fine with this current mouse (Logitech FirstMouse+
PS/2) until I put on Slackware 3.5 with XFree86 3.3.2.  So, I don't know
what's up with it.  If I have GPM running before I start X, I can't use
the mouse at all in X.  When I switch from a text-mode console to an X
console, I get a pause of about 2-3 seconds where I can't do anything,
(i.e. move the mouse or type) and then when I finally do get control,
the mouse goes haywire for 1/2 second and it's like it did about a
million clicks / movements in that time.  It's really weird and very
annoying.

I'm running XFree86 3.2.? (whatever came with Redhat 4.2), so if this is
an X problem, it's not limited to 3.3.2.  I tried it with both my old
PS/2 mouse and my newer PS/2 trackball, and they both do it, so I doubt
it's a flakey mouse.  The only times I've really noticed the pointer
jumping around was with a bad mouse; it'd suddenly lock up while I was
in X, I'd have to wiggle the cable (we've all done this one, haven't
we?) and then switch to a VC and back.  It'd really go nuts for a second
or so after this with clicks to programs, the wm, everything.  Luckily
it never seemed to launch any programs.  With a working mouse (soldered
cables!), I only get a 2 to 3 second delay after switching back to X.
Weird.  This is really getting annoying now that someone pointed it out!

1. Mouse Systems 3-button PS/2 mouse - weird behaviour.

Hi,
I'm running the current version of Linux and XF86. I recently
bought a Mouse Systems PS/2 mouse.
Although the cursor moves "left", "right" and "up". A
slight down motion, causes the cursor to drop to the bottom of the
screen.
In the XF86Config file, I have protocol set to PS/2 and
device set to psaux. I treid setting it to MouseSystems, and that
doesnt work at all.
The h/w does not seem to be at fault since, the mouse works
well with Win95.
Any sort of info/help/advice would really be appreciated.
                Thanx.
                                Pravin.
