I _really_ hope someone tells me that I'm wrong, but I'm afraid that=20
there is nothing you can do but downgrade to XFree 2.1.*

As it is stated on the Portuguese HOWTO (it will be very easy for you to=
=20
read ;-) ), the X-Consortium decided that dead-keys should be supported=20
by apps, not by the server, so this support is no longer present in=20
X11r6 (XFree86 3.* is an X11r6 server for x86 unices).

The bad news is that there are some S3 cards that are supported in 3.1.*=
=20
only, so if you have one of those, you'll have to live without dead-keys=20
or you'll have to add support for them yourself. (It shouldn't be very=20
difficult if you can have a look at 3.* sources, but of course it is not=20
straightforward).

I access to my Linux box from a SparcStation running an X11r5 server, so=
=20
I haven't tried anything of this myself.

The Linux Portuguese-HOWTO is mantained by Joao Carlos Rodrigues Pereira=20

comp.os.linux.answers, comp.os.linux.misc and comp.os.linux.setup, so you=
=20
should be able to get it from many archives on the Net.
