Cirrus Logic 542X ISA XF86Config help

Post by LaCier Vincen » Sun, 09 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I'm playing around with the Slackware '96 Linux (downloaded, not from CD),
and I'm having trouble getting XF86 to use my card in SVGA.  Of course I
don't have any problems using the VGA16 server.  I've read the README and I
have a few more settings to try, but one error that see often is
(paraphrased - please forgive me, I'm at work) _X11ServerUNIX????:?????:
errno = 111 (the ?? is where I can't remember what it says - I can get it
if necessary).  My monitor is a no-name brand non-interlace SVGA, and my
video card has 1M of RAM.  Any help is appreciated.

BTW, I'm also downloading Red Hat 4.1 to play with next week - it sounds
more like what I'm looking for.

Thanks for your help.

LaCier,
        If you're using XFree86 3.1.2 or earlier, upgrade to 3.2.  You'll find
that the setup is much easier.  I have CL5446 card, and XFree86 3.1.2
didn't detect my video ram correctly.  It is possible to configure it
correctly, but XFree86 3.2 is worth the download anyway.  Also, read the
/usr/X11/lib/X11/doc/README.cirrus file.
The error message you're getting sounds like you might not have the
symbolic links to your X-server set up correctly, but maybe someone else
another idea...

Wouldn't you know it - You work on something for two weeks and can't get it
to work.  You call for help and that night you happen to hold your tongue
in the right position and find the right combination!  Go figure!

1. Cirrus Logic 542x and segmentation fault errors

I am continually getting a 'segmentation fault error' whenever I do
anything that uses the SVGA card in my systemm. I have a Cirrus Logic
5420 with 1Mb of RAM, on a 486DX33 with 4Mb. I don't have any trouble
with the rest of the LINUX system (except my Sony CD, but that's another
story entirely); it runs great with text only. But I can't show ANY
graphics at all without that error and a garbaged screen.

I'd appreciate any help, thanks in advance!
