Is it really true? Is it the case that Linux does not provide support
for the S3 325 chipset????????

How can I get a definitive answer? How do I find out how to go about
writing it if I decide that's the way to go?

I'm using XFree86 and a #9 FX332 right now. You want the XF86_S3V server
from XFree3.2

It is supported by XFree86 3.2 (get the XF86_S3V server). You WILL have
problems with SVGAlib though. There is allegedly (sp?) a patch for it
somewhere, but I haven't tried it yet. BTW, none of the accelerated
functions are supported by this version of X. The 3.2A version (in
alpha) has some accelerated functions, but I haven't tried it either. I
would go back to an S3 Trio64V (not the Trio64V+) based card if I could,
as it was much more responsive than the 332 (xbench was used to verify
this). Oh well, maybe the next version of XFree86 will have better
support :-)
