Can CL-GD 7556 work under 16bpp?

Post by Edmond So » Sat, 22 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi, there,

1). This has been a headache for a long while .  I am running X on my
laptop, the Video card is CL-GD 7556 and according to the document, it is
supported. However the problem  is that whenI kill the X either by quit X
(using alt+ctrl+backspace) or shutdown -r now the machine, it won't get me
back to text mode!

2). Another problem is although I have 2M video mem, I can only use the 8 bpp
mode. 16 bpp mode works but the color is awfully bad.  I am here attaching
my XFree configuration file, please help!

Many thanks,
Edmond

Does (CTL+ATL+F2) get you a login prompt? Can you type but only see garbage
characters printed? If so try "stty sane" ; followed by "setfont". I'm not using a
laptop but sometimes on certain video drivers. I added the above lines to the end
of my /usr/X11R6/bin/startx file.

No, it only gives me a blank screen with a flickering cursor. I can't see any
charactors there.
My current guess is that CL-GD 7556 card is not "fully " supported by this SVGA
server.
I am hoping someone could come up with better X server, I don't have the time to
develop
one of my own from the Xfree source. I am using Xfree 86 version 3.3.3.1-49, I think
is the
newest version at least a few days ago.

Thanks for the reply.

1. Can Cirrus Logic 7556 work under 16bpp?

Hi, there,

Through some manipulation of X server, I finally get my clgd card run
under 8 bpp. But when I issue startx -- -bpp 16, the color isn't right,
very dim background which is useless. I put a line under screen section
at weight 555, initially the X brought up. Just a few seconds, it dies
with no error messages. I have tried to include many parameters, such
as option "linear" option "noaccel", fast_dram , slow_draw, nobitblt, etc,
it just won't work!

Could any experts give me some suggestions? Many thanks.
